UPDATE: Students applying for terms in 2021 through spring 2022 are NOT required to submit GRE scores. If an applicant has already taken the GRE and believes their scores will be beneficial to their application, they may submit them-- but it is NOT required.

Previous Education: A Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering from an ABET-accredited university program.

Transcripts: Applicants are required to upload a record of their unofficial transcript from each academic institution (undergraduate and/or graduate levels) attended. NOTE: official, original academic credentials that are issued in a language other than English must be accompanied by a certified English translation.

Letters of Reference: Applicants must electronically submit a minimum of two reference letters as part of the online admissions application process.

GRE Scores: Graduate Certificate Programs DO NOT require applicants to submit GRE Scores*. Please refer to the GRE page for further information. Please note that GRE Scores are required and useful in combination with all other materials submitted. Official GRE Test Scores must be sent directly from the Education Testing Service (ETS) – link out? The institution code for the University of Pittsburgh is 2927.

TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo Exam Scores: Students may submit official results from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) but all international applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit scores from whichever English Language Proficiency exam they take. It is the policy of the University of Pittsburgh to admit only those students with a TOEFL score of at least 550 (paper-based test), 213 (computer-based test) or 80 (internet-based)*. Official TOEFL test scores must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Using the institution code of 2927 for the University of Pittsburgh is sufficient. Please refer to www.ets.org/toefl for further information on the TOEFL and registration forms.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores must be sent directly from IELTS to your admitting department. It is the policy of the University of Pittsburgh to admit only those students with an IELTS of at least Band 6.5*. You can upload copies of your score reports (if available) when submitting your online application. This uploaded version is not considered “official” and will be used for preliminary review until your official scores are received from ETS or IELTS.

Duolingo Scores - In recognition of the TOEFL/IELTS’s physical and financial constraints experienced by many of our international applicants, the University of Pittsburgh will now accept the Duolingo English Test in lieu of the TOEFL or IELTS. The Duolingo English test is an online English proficiency test which is convenient and affordable as it can be taken online, on demand, in under an hour. Minimum acceptable score follows our TOEFL and IELTS minimums and is 105*. Once you receive certified test results, you can log into your Duolingo account, click on the “Send Results” button next to your test results, and select “University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering” to receive your results. We will not receive your scores until this step is taken.

*The minimum score requirements listed above for the TOEFL, IELTS, and Duolingo are the minimums for the University of Pittsburgh, your selected department may have higher requirements. Please visit your department's page for more information.

Proficiency in English: Graduate-level students must possess a sufficient level of proficiency in English in order for them to successfully understand lectures, participate in class discussions, and be able to study without being hindered by any language issues. Students who have been appointed as Teaching Assistants (TAs) or Teaching Fellows (TFs) and are not native English speakers are required to take and English Fluency Test upon arrival at the University of Pittsburgh to evaluate their spoken English.
