Optimal Technique for Proximal Pole Scaphoid Fixation

Scaphoid fractures account for 2-7% of all fractures and 82-89% of all carpal bone fractures. Of these scaphoid fractures, 94% occur at the waist or distal pole while only 6% occur at the proximal pole. Fractures that occur at the proximal pole have a higher rate of nonunion (40%), or failed healing, because of the lack of an independent vascularization.

As a result, the purpose of this project is to determine the optimal fixation technique based on screw type, length, and angle. Specifically, this project will look at compression forces that occur at the fracture site of a proximal pole fracture. Because of this project, surgeons will be better able to promote bone healing and minimize the incidence of nonunion.
