The Department of Bioengineering develops engineers who work at the intersection of engineering, biology, and medicine. Programs span tissue engineering, biomechanics, medical devices, and neural engineering, preparing graduates for careers in research, healthcare, and industry.

The Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering focuses on energy, reaction engineering, materials, and environmental processes. With research spanning catalysis, polymers, electrochemistry, and sustainable energy systems, the department prepares students for roles across the chemical, energy, and pharmaceutical industries.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering addresses the built and natural environment: from infrastructure and transportation to water resources and environmental protection. Students work on problems with direct real-world impact, supported by research in structural engineering, geotechnics, and sustainability.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering operates at the boundary of hardware, software, and systems. Research and teaching span signal processing, communications, computer architecture, power systems, and embedded computing.

The Department of Industrial Engineering applies engineering principles to complex systems involving people, processes, and technology. With roots going back more than 100 years, the department maintains strong industry connections and active research in operations research, human factors, and healthcare systems engineering.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science is the largest in the Swanson School, with research and teaching across thermal sciences, mechanics, robotics, manufacturing, and advanced materials. Graduates go on to careers spanning aerospace, energy, automotive, biomedical, and defense industries.
