Professor
Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science

overview

After over 4 years of postdoctoral experience at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), I joined the faculty of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Pittsburgh in Fall 2003. Since then, I have founded the "Micro/Bio Fluidics Lab" to explore microfluidics research areas towards applications of Lab-on-a-Chip (LOC) systems and energy and to integrate research and education. My primary research focus is on "microfluidics," fluid mechanics at micro or even smaller scales with particular emphasis on the development of a variety of micro/bio fluidic transducers and integrated systems that enable us to efficiently handle a wide range of micro/bio substances such as micro/nano fluids, functional particles, molecules, and so on. One of the most immediate applications is miniaturized biomedical microfluidic systems, commonly called Lab-on-a-Chip (LOC) systems, currently having a tremendous impact on biomedical and healthcare applications such as DNA sequencing, microarrays, disease diagnostics, bio-entity manipulations, and so on. The nature of my research is highly interdisciplinary, encompassing fluid mechanics, micro/nano manufacturing, interfacial science, electrical engineering, and bioengineering. In essence, my research activities heavily rely on micro/nano fabrication technology, leveraging development and usage of the micro/nano facilities at the University of Pittsburgh. Since I established the "Micro/Bio Fluidics Lab" at the University of Pittsburgh in Fall 2003, my major research topic areas have been Microbubble Dynamics and Control, LOC-Based Particle Sampling, and Separation/Concentration in Droplet-Based (Digital) Microfluidics. In addition, most recently, I have developed novel Propulsion Mechanisms for water-floating and underwater mini/micro robots. Below are related publications and funding.
