Vijayaragavan Ganesan

Senior Research Associate
Starting January 2027

Dr. Vijayaragavan Ganesan will join the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Pittsburgh as a Senior Research Associate. His research focuses on the development, processing, and characterization of advanced magnetic materials, with particular expertise in rare-earth permanent magnets, including Nd–Fe–B and Sm–Fe–N systems. He received his Ph.D. in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and his M.Tech. in Materials Science from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. Prior to joining the University of Pittsburgh, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Japan, investigating Sm–Fe-based magnetic thin films. His research experience includes alloy design, powder metallurgy, spark plasma sintering, grain-boundary engineering, thin-film deposition, and advanced materials characterization using electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and atom probe tomography. His research interests include soft magnetic materials, alloy development, arc melting, melt spinning, and microstructure engineering for advanced magnetic and energy applications.
