Education

Workforce development is AMPED’s top priority. At Pitt, students prepare for careers in power magnetics through the Swanson School of Engineering’s Electric Power Engineering program, which covers power electronics and rotating electrical machine design, and the interdisciplinary Engineering Science honors program spanning physics, materials science, and electrical engineering. Courses taught by AMPED faculty include Basics and Applications of Power Magnetic Devices, covering soft magnetic materials, electric, magnetic, and thermal equivalent circuit models, finite element modeling, and multi-objective optimization. At NC State, students engage through the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, which offers undergraduate and graduate study in power electronics and power systems, including a renewable electric energy systems concentration and graduate programs in electric power systems engineering, and through education and workforce activities of the PowerAmerica Institute, a national wide bandgap power electronics manufacturing institute headquartered at NC State, and the FREEDM Systems Center.

Beyond the classroom, AMPED students present in monthly technical seminars with industry partners and at the annual workshop, work on member-funded research with faculty and engineers from industry and national laboratories, and pursue internships and co-ops with partner companies that often lead to careers.
