Advanced Magnetics for Power and Energy Development (AMPED) is a university-based consortium in magnetic materials and components for electric power conversion. Administered by the University of Pittsburgh in collaboration with North Carolina State University, AMPED brings together faculty, students, industry, and national laboratory partners to advance soft magnetic materials and component technologies, from fundamental science to end-use application, and to build the workforce the power electronics and electric power industries need.
Magnetic components such as transformers, inductors, and motors largely determine how small, efficient, and reliable power equipment can be, which makes them central to an electric grid facing rapid electrification and the growth of AI data centers. AMPED is a core center of Pitt’s Center for Energy, which links AMPED with Pitt’s other energy research centers, the Energy Innovation Center laboratories, and regional and national partners.
AMPED is also rooted in Pennsylvania, a national leader in soft magnetic materials and advanced manufacturing. We partner with Pennsylvania manufacturers and with the Commonwealth, including through the Manufacturing PA Innovation Program funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), to move new magnetic materials and components from the laboratory to the factory floor.
Mission
To develop an innovation ecosystem and educational programs for advancing soft magnetic materials and component technologies spanning fundamental science to end-use application in collaboration with various agencies, offices, and programs.
Goals
- To play a leadership role in providing highly qualified talent to the burgeoning soft magnetics industry and the electric power industry more broadly.
- To serve as the primary convener for a unique and much needed university / industry / national lab community.
- To become the premier source of university technical support to industry (papers, patents, direct research support).
Vision
Our vision is an innovation and educational ecosystem that includes:
- Foundational research with a diverse base of funding support spanning federal, private, foundation, and other resources.
- A range of existing and newly developed interdisciplinary educational programs as well as internship and coop opportunities for students.
- Direct support of industry research and workforce development needs in the form of publications, patents, talent, and fee-for-service.
