Richard Byron Beddingfield

NCSU Co-Director, AMPED
Research Associate Professor, Electrical & Computer Engineering

Richard Beddingfield focuses on power electronics and high power, medium frequency magnetics, working at the intersection of materials science and electrical engineering to improve magnetic component designs for wide bandgap converters. He earned his B.S. (2013), M.S. in Electric Power Systems Engineering (2014), and Ph.D. (2018) at NC State, where he conducted research with the FREEDM Center under Prof. Bhattacharya, including a co-op with Nucor Steel, which sparked his interest in high power converters. As an ORISE postdoctoral fellow at NETL from 2018 to 2020 he developed and characterized new magnetic materials before returning to NC State, where he is now a member of the faculty working on medium voltage converters and medium frequency magnetics for electrification and grid applications. He has collaborated with Prof. Ohodnicki since 2011. He is a co-founder of AMPED and a strong advocate for student education and outreach.
