The MMCL Lab is used for a wide range of samples and purposes, including: 

• standard metallography
• surface topography of additive manufactured parts, metal grids embedded in polymer, and deposited films
• 3D structure of biological samples
• hardness measurements in individual grains
• and so much more.

Our user base consists mostly of graduate students from the Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Department, but we have users from other Pitt engineering and science departments as well!

How do I get access? 

If you are an internal user (a Pitt affiliate), fill out and return this form. If you are an external user, email ssoemmcl@pitt.edu to start a conversation. 

What are your hours? 

The core hours are 9 am - 5 pm. Novice users are granted daytime access. Qualified users may operate instruments outside of the core hours. 

Where are you located? 

We are on the 5th floor of Benedum Hall, in the 532 suite within the lab area.
