Research: Mr. Nelson's research is aimed at optimizing thermoresponsive hydrogels based on N-isopropylacrylamide that can be used for injection into injured myocardium. Currently his work focuses on turning this material into a suitable one for drug delivery upon injection. He is looking at forming polymer-protein conjugates to delay the diffusion of protein from the polymer scaffold. He studies the release profiles of the protein related to the material composition and environment. Future work will involve combining both drugs and cells with the scaffold to make a more functional tissue engineering product.
