Benedum Building Blocks

Carrie Iwema

Hello, Swanson School of Engineering! Welcome to a new segment in Benedum Bridges that focuses on updates and information from the Bevier Science & Engineering Library. ULS is hosting three events that may be of interest to faculty:

March 18: Experiential Learning Student Showcase (11am-2pm)
Academia & AI: a student-faculty dialogue (5-6pm)

Are you interested in what it means for genAI to be a part of Pitt research and scholarship? Do you wonder how we should approach how we teach and learn in light of these increasingly advanced tools? Join our student-moderated faculty panel for an interactive discussion about generative artificial intelligence at the University of Pittsburgh, with questions provided by YOU! We welcome input from all in the Pitt community, especially Pitt students.

March 25: Two representatives from ESRI (the company that created the ArcGIS software) will talk about some modern aspects of geospatial mapping and analysis. The workshop/presentation consists of two parts:

BEYOND 2D MAPS: Modeling, Visualizing, and Analyzing the Built Environment in 3D (1-2:30pm)
Presenters will discuss how ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Urban create interactive 3D scenes, evaluate development scenarios, analyze zoning compliance, building massing, shadows, visibility, and digital twin applications.

GEOAI IN PRACTICE: Applying and Refining AI Models in GIS (2:30-4pm)
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming spatial analysis. This portion will explore how GeoAI workflows operate within ArcGIS Pro. Participants will get exposure to ArcGIS Pro Deep Learning tools and the Living Atlas, learn how to refine and retrain Deep Learning models using their own datasets, and gain an understanding of how GeoAI enhances efficiency, scalability, and analytical depth across multiple fields.

Sincerely,
Carrie L. Iwema, PhD, MLS (she/her)
