Faculty Mentor: William Wagner

Research:Mr. Woolley's research focuses on thrombogenesis in the setting of mechanical circulatory assist devices, with an emphasis on platelet and leukocyte interactions with ventricular assist devices (VADs) in adult and pediatric applications. In vitro and in vivo biocompatibility characterization of novel materials and coatings at the blood/surface interface in rotary VADs will be performed. Biocompatibility information obtained from this novel material characterization will be used to optimize the design of the pediatric rotary VAD currently being developed at the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Woolley will also begin evaluating the biocompatibility of adult pulsatile and rotary VADs through measurement of hemostatic and immunological markers in patients at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. These markers will be correlated with secondary indicators of end organ infarcts, infection and immuno-sensitization.

Mr. Woolley's research focuses on thrombogenesis in the setting of mechanical circulatory assist devices, with an emphasis on platelet and leukocyte interactions with ventricular assist devices (VADs) in adult and pediatric applications. Mr. Woolley's thesis combines novel in vitro thrombosis testing with long-term investigation of patients implanted with these devices.
