The aim of the Undergraduate Certificate in Sustainability is to provide undergraduates the opportunity to enhance their education by including sustainability in their course of study. This new certificate program in “Sustainability” transcends existing Schools and Departments at the University of Pittsburgh, capitalizes on ongoing Sustainability-growth opportunities in teaching and research at the University of Pittsburgh, and utilizes the framework of the Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation (MCSI) to execute the certificate.

Is there an order in which I need to take classes?
It is highly encouraged that you take Current Issues in Sustainability (ENGR-1905) as early as possible. You should aim to take Sustainability Capstone (ENGR-1907) as your last class for the certificate.
When are the core classes offered? And how do I get in?
What happens if I can’t get into the core classes?

I am having trouble enrolling into Current Issues in Sustainability (ENGR-1905). What can I do?
This course is open to all Pitt students. If you are having trouble enrolling or being placed on the waitlist, please email.
If you are on the waitlist, please know that 1) we are trying our best to accommodate all students and 2) this class is offered both semesters.
Are there any prerequisites for the courses?
There are no prerequisites for Current Issues in Sustainability (ENGR-1905).
You are required to have taken Current Issues in Sustainability, either (CEE-1610) or (GEOL 1030), and your electives prior to taking Sustainability Capstone. If there are any major issues with scheduling, you may ask to meet with Dr. Sanchez.
Is the certificate only available to specific majors?
The certificate is open to all Pitt undergraduates! We encourage you to explore the approved electives and find courses that align with your goals and interests.
How do I apply?
