Recipients of the prestigious Nordenberg and Stamps Scholarships were recently announced, and among them are two incoming undergraduate students to the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering. Juan Colmenares Bittar received a Nordenberg Scholarship, and Marisa Maisano was awarded a Stamps Scholarship.
Bittar, who attends Downington STEM Academy, is one of five recipients of a Nordenberg Scholarship. Over 900 high school seniors across Pennsylvania applied for the scholarship. Named in honor of Chancellor Emeritus Mark A. Nordenberg, the scholarship promotes “continued leadership development, civic engagement, and career preparation.” As a recipient, Bittar, who plans to pursue a degree in environmental engineering, will receive full tuition for four years of undergraduate studies.
Maisano, a senior at Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School who plans to study civil engineering, has received a Stamps Scholar Award. The award recognizes “first-year students from Pennsylvania who exemplify leadership, scholarship, service, perseverance, and innovation.” Through the Stamps Scholars Program, Maisano will receive full tuition, room and board, and mandatory fees as well as an allowance for books, supplies, transportation, and related costs. Enrichment funds up to $17,400 are also available for opportunities such as conferences, study abroad, and leadership training. Of the over 900 students across Pennsylvania who applied for the Stamps Scholarship, only five were awarded.
