MS-MPE Student Feature: Wageesha Mallehevidana

In 2017, I received my BS in Biomedical Engineering (Honors) from General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Sri Lanka. I then began my career as a biomedical engineer in clinical settings, where I managed medical equipment, implemented preventive maintenance practices, and supported clinicians through technical training. I later transitioned into automation, developing embedded systems and automated solutions while working with small engineering teams and preparing technical documentation. I also co-founded an agritech startup, where I contributed to the design and pilot deployment of IoT-based sensing platforms. Across these roles, I strengthened my skills in biosignal acquisition, embedded electronics, and quality improvement, shaping my interest in medical device development.
I chose the University of Pittsburgh because it is widely recognized for turning ideas into technologies that reach patients. Pitt’s deep integration with UPMC and its emphasis on interdisciplinary teamwork make it a uniquely supportive place to learn medical product engineering. The MS-MPE program, particularly enriched by resources like the Coulter Translational Research Partnership and the Center for Medical Innovation, provides the perfect platform to design, prototype, and refine solutions that address real clinical needs. What further drew me to Pitt is the program’s clear alignment with the medical device industry, providing training in device design, validation, regulatory expectations, and industry standard development practices. This combination of clinical exposure and industry-focused preparation is exactly what I am seeking to build a strong foundation for my career in the medical device field.
After completing the program, I hope to join the medical device industry with a focus on medical device validation, regulatory pathways, and quality systems.
