IEEE Elevates Pitt Bioengineering Professor Ramakrishna Mukkamala to Fellow
In recognition of his contributions to advanced hemodynamic monitoring and cuffless blood pressure measurement, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) elected Swanson School of Engineering Professor Ramakrishna Mukkamala to their 2025 class of fellows.
Mukkamala is Professor in the Departments of Bioengineering and Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. In the Cardiovascular Health Tech Laboratory, Mukkamala’s team uses physiology, data analytics, and sensors to develop methods and devices for screening, diagnosis, and therapeutic guidance of an array of cardiovascular diseases.
“This is a well-deserved honor for Rama and a source of immense pride for our department,” noted Sanjeev Shroff, Department Chair and Distinguished Professor of Bioengineering. “He is passionate about developing innovative, physiology-based cardiovascular health monitoring technologies and his election as an IEEE Fellow is a clear recognition of the quality and impact of his work.”
Mukkamala currently serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering and is Past Chair of the IEEE EMBS Technical Committee on Cardiopulmonary Systems and Physiology-Based Engineering and IEEE Biomedical Engineering Award Committee. Each year, following a rigorous evaluation procedure, the IEEE Fellow Committee recommends a select group of recipients for elevation to IEEE Fellow, and fewer than 0.1% of voting members are selected annually for this member grade elevation.
“I have contributed to the IEEE and the EMBS since I started my research career.” Mukkamala said. “I’m incredibly honored that my peers have recognized me for my research.”
