MEMS Chair Honored with Special Symposium at the MS&T24 Technical Meeting and Exhibition
The MS&T24 Technical Meeting and Exhibition returns again for another year, this time being hosted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The event runs from October 6-9, and focuses on topics ranging from Additive Manufacturing, Artificial Intelligence, Biomaterials, Alloys, Nanomaterials, Nuclear Energy, Sustainability, and more.

This year, the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) is holding a symposium entitled: “Advances in High-Temperature Oxidation and Degradation of Materials for Harsh Environments: A SMD and FMD Symposium Honoring Brian Gleeson”. This special symposium honors Gleeson, the MEMS Department Chair and Harry S. Tack Chaired Professor, for his 35+ years of work researching corrosion science, advancing understanding of the high temperature oxidation and degradation of alloys and coatings.
Gleeson earned both his BS and MS degrees in Materials Science from the University of Western Ontario before completing his PhD at the University of California, Los Angeles. He then served as a postdoctoral fellow and later joined the faculty at the University of New South Wales in Australia in 1990. Afterward, he moved to the United States, becoming a faculty member at Iowa State University in 1998, and ultimately settled at the University of Pittsburgh, where he has been since 2007.
The symposium aims to recognize and commend Gleeson for his mentorship and research accomplishments over the years. He is paving the way for the next generation of leaders in the field of high-temperature oxidation and degradation of alloys and coatings.
This symposium was organized by:
- Kinga A. Unocic, North Carolina State University
