Bopaya Bidanda, the Ernest Roth Professor of Industrial Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering, presented a new paper at this past weekend’s IISE Annual Conference & Expo in Montreal, Canada.

The paper, “Reconstructing original design: Process planning for reverse engineering,” was selected as the Best Applications Paper in the 2023 IISE Transactions Focus Issues on Design and Manufacturing.

“Being in a room full of peers and bright minds is always an inspiring experience,” Bidanda said. “I was just as enthusiastic about hearing others’ work as I was about presenting ours.

In the article, researchers propose a new methology to revolutionize the accuracy of reverse engineering, providing new opportunities for the advanced manufacturing industry by blurring the boundary between the physical and digital worlds and significantly reducing the lead time and increasing precision for the remanufacturing of high-value-added products.

Bidanda co-authored the paper alongside a former Pitt doctoral student, Zhaohui Geng, now assistant professor at Ohio University; and Arman Sabbaghi, head-clinical trials at Unlearn.AI and former associate professor of statistics at Purdue University.

While at the conference and expo, Bidanda also accepted his Frank & Lillian Gilbreth and Book-of-the-Year awards.
