Pennsylvania Academy of Junior Science (PJAS): Thomas Lake Excellence in High School Physics Award

Faculty Lead: Dr. Brandon Grainger

Outreach Type: PK–12

The Thomas Lake Excellence in High School Physics Award is an annual recognition created by Dr. Brandon Grainger to honor the legacy of his former high school physics teacher, Mr. Thomas Lake.

The award is presented during the Pennsylvania Academy of Junior Science (PJAS) regional competition held each spring at Baldwin High School, which attracts more than 500 middle and high school students from across Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Dr. Grainger reviews student research presentations—focusing on creativity, clarity, scientific rigor, and relevance to physics—and selects one exceptional high school physics project each year. The award not only celebrates academic excellence but also highlights the importance of physics education and encourages students to pursue scientific inquiry with confidence.

Impact and Learning Outcomes

The award supports and inspires young scientists by helping students:

  • Gain recognition for outstanding physics research
  • Strengthen confidence in STEM pathways
  • Connect with Pitt’s engineering community through visible engagement
  • Develop presentation, communication, and scientific reasoning skills
  • View physics as a foundation for career opportunities in engineering and academia

The award also reflects Pitt ECE’s commitment to nurturing young talent and elevating STEM achievement throughout Pennsylvania.

Support

  • PJAS hosts the competition and provides the judging infrastructure.
  • Event participation includes approximately 500 students, hosted annually at Baldwin High School.
