Stephen Balmert

I completed my B.S. in Bioengineering here at the University of Pittsburgh, and then elected to stay and join the Little Lab to pursue my Ph.D. in Bioengineering.  The Little Lab presented a relatively unique opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research at the intersection between biomaterials, controlled drug delivery, and immunology.  I was particularly interested in the concept of developing synthetic biomaterial-based systems to communicate with and orchestrate responses from immune cells.  I was also excited to work with and learn from people with diverse scientific backgrounds, both within the lab and through extensive collaborations with other researchers and clinicians at the university.  My thesis involves biomimetic delivery of regulatory T cell inducing factors with microparticles and microneedles to suppress cutaneous inflammation.  As such, I have had the opportunity to develop complementary skill sets working in both the Little Lab and in the lab of Louis D. Falo, Jr., a collaborator from the Department of Dermatology.
