The content of
this workshop will emphasize issues relating to grantsmanship and strategies
for successfully navigating obstacles and developing solutions for
underrepresented minority (URM) students on the journey to a successful
research career. Dr. Amarreh will discuss the strategies and tools for
obtaining NIH funding and NIH opportunities and policies for URMs. During this
workshop, Dr. Amarreh will offer practical exercises related to the topic.

Ishmael (Ish) Amarreh, Ph.D., MPA, Chief, Research Scientist
Development, Program Officer for Global Mental Health, Office for Research on
Disparities and Global Mental Health (ORDGMH), NIMH.
Dr.
Amarreh is the Chief for the Research Scientist Development Program. Dr.
Amarreh is responsible for the initiation, planning, execution, assessment,
coordination and promotion of international research and scientist development
activities within the ORDGMH, and in conjunction with other NIH Institutes and
Centers, and governmental and international organizations as needed. In
addition, Dr. Amarreh is responsible for supporting the research in Global
Mental Health Program for ORDGMH. In this capacity, he works closely with the
Chief for Global Mental Health Research and advises on policies, goals, and
objectives for global mental health research. Dr. Amarreh serves as Project
Officer for the international research portfolio at NIMH and works with NIMH
extramural and intramural program staff to develop global projects and provide
technical consultation to the global mental health community. Prior to joining
NIMH, Dr. Amarreh was a Health Scientist and served as a senior science advisor
to NIDA’s Associate Director for Scientific Affairs and Director of the
Division of Extramural Research where his accomplishments included the
following: 2015 NIH Director's Award for outstanding accomplishment; launched a
300 million dollar study on Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development; developed
and conducted workshops and scientific conferences for NIDA; authored the
strategic plan for Collaborative Research on Addiction at NIH; and provided
executive level guidance, in particular through strategic planning and policy
implementation, and senior-level decision-making based on information
management. Dr. Amarreh has unique and highly specific expertise with a Doctor
of Philosophy degree in Neuroscience, and a Master of International Public Affairs
degree.
