accepting with James R. Martin II, U.S. Steel Dean of Engineering
Our co-op student of the year is Dimitry Labko, mechanical engineer with Jet Propulsion Labs in Pasadena, California. Dimitry’s family emigrated from Belaruse when he was a child. A calculus teacher and high school swim coach saw his amazing potential
and encouraged Labko to attend college. Pitt was lucky enough to receive his application. Dimitry was an honors student in SSOE and active on the Formula SAE racecar team which propelled his interest in aeronautics. A few words from his supervisor
at JPL, Kerry Klein:
“Dimitry Labko is one of those co-op students that you come across once every couple of years that clearly makes a lasting impact with those he works with. Dimitry supported a team of engineers during a critical phase of a very complicated and technically
challenging flight hardware build.
Early on in the effort, Dimitry worked closely with his primary mentor supporting test activities for a deployment mechanism. During this effort, it became clear Dimitry was a quick study and was interested in learning as much as he could on the job.
The ability to quickly learn on the job is critical early in the co-op cycle as this is when the student learns our organizations’ processes, procedures, and generally “how we do work.” Because Dimitry was able to quickly pick-up on these critical
items, he was able to take on larger tasks and make a much more impactful contribution to the team.”
