Preventable medical error is the 6th leading cause of death in the US, with over 100,000 lives lost and total direct costs of over $29 billion per year. Simulation-based healthcare training has been proven effective in decreasing errors and improving actual clinical skills. The market for patient simulators is expected to rise to $612 million by 2017; but current simulators have significant drawbacks such as complex operation, high initial costs and resource requirements and lack of customizability. BodyExplorer is a next-generation simulation system for training healthcare providers that combines an intuitive user interface, augmented-reality visualization, and provide real-time feedback to enable on-demand 24/7 learning. This system will offer cost savings, enhanced access for trainees, and an enlarged market with new venues for simulation training. The goal is to develop a market-ready integrated system with completed end-user feedback and training.
