Research Interests

Failure of chronically implanted silicon-based neural electrode arrays is a major obstacle impending the development of neural prosthesis, since their clinical applications will require a life-time-long stable performance. Surface modification of the silicon-based neural probes is needed in order to improve their biocompatibility and integration within the host brain tissue. During the course of my research in the NTE lab, I studied L1, a neuron adhesion molecule expressed in developing CNS and PNS, because of its known properties in promoting neural extension and neuronal survival. The aim of my research work was to modify the neural electrode surface with the neural attractive L1 protein with the goal of improving the long-term stability. We hypothesized that maintaining neuron-electrode proximity is instrumental for obtaining long-term stable recordings. To test this hypothesis, in vitro and in vivo work was performed.
