Sean Justice named 2017 Co-op Student of the Year

SJ

U.S. Steel Dean of Engineering, Gerald Holder, and Co-op Student of the Year Sean Justice.

Sean Justice was selected as the 2017 Co-op Student of the Year, and with good reason. He’s an Electrical Engineering student who exceeded expectations both in the classroom (3.964 GPA) and out with his co-op with Eaton Corporation.

At Eaton, he received the departmental “Paul MacGyver Rademacher Award” for “creativity in continuous improvement efforts to work toward a better business” in the Power Quality Division.

In his Supplier Development role, Sean drafted and piloted a new standard process for processing and reworking high value non-returnable NCM for multiple manufacturing lines. The process helped to recover $37,000 worth of NCM by the end of his rotation, with the potential of at least $80,000 more on existing NCM for product lines identified. The process has been continued with other co-ops after he was done.

Sean became involved in an initiative called “Change the Game,” which is a non-profit organization providing youth mentorship, citizenship and environmental stewardship to students from inner city schools.

For six years Sean acted as an assistant for Denise’s People, a non-profit started by his grandmother. He coordinated events, ran in the races, and as a musician, provided the music at a wine-tasting event. They raised $300,000 dollars over the six years.

He is heavily involved on the Worship team at Cornerstone Christian Campus Ministry. Cornerstone is an outreach organization partnering with the Bellefield Church on our campus, but the ministry also works with the North Side’s Allegheny Alliance Church, which is strongly involved in a homeless ministry.
