overview

Dr. Mao is a world-leader in the research on plasticity, deformation physics and fracture mechanics of materials and a pioneer in atomic scale experimental mechanics with over 300 publications including 230 journal papers with over 20 Science, Nature and Nature-serials articles. He has achieved international reputation in in-situ transmission electron microscope and is amongst the most cited in the field ( over 16,700 citations, H-index=65). He has given over one hundred keynote, plenary and invited talks in national/international conferences and symposiums, and serves as Editor in-Chef, and Editor of International Journal of Metallurgy and Metal Physics, and Advances in Materials Research respectively. Dr. Mao has been honored by distinguished awards at his home institution and internationally, such as Elected Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering, Elected APS fellow (American Physics Society), Elected Fellow of IAAM (International Association of Advanced Materials), ASME fellow, Vebleo Fellow (prominence recognition in the field of science and engineering), the TMS-SMD Award, the Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Award, Esso Research Excellence Award, the William Kepler Whiteford Endowed and the John Swanson Endowed Professor. Dr. Mao was also past chairs for TMS (Metals, Materials & Minerals Society) Committee on Mechanical Behaviour of Materials, IMS (International Metallographic Society) finance committee, Guest-editor for Material Science & Engineering International Journal, and Editorial Board member for Nanomaterials, Acta Metallurgica Sinica, and Journal of Nanotechnology and Nanomaterials.

Dr. Mao has made significant contributions to the deformation physics and fracture theory of metals, nanocrystalline, intermetallics and piezo- and ferroelectric ceramics, particularly through innovative atomistic scale experimental mechanics which has contributed to opening a significant new field of experimental molecular dynamics: Dr. Mao pioneered in-situ high resolution transmission electron microscopy on stress-controlled phase transformation and electrochemical-lithiation and discovered on monoatomic metallic glasses through in-situ ultrafast liquid quenching.
