The 2026 Annual International Pittsburgh Energy and Carbon Management Conference (PECMC) will be held virtually. This year, the conference focuses on the benefits of clean energy and carbon management technologies in mitigating the effects of global climate change. Our faithful conference attendees, who have been successful in developing and using a fossil fuel-based economy over the years, are now focusing on mitigating the global temperature rise driven by mankind’s reliance on fossil fuels and the resulting greenhouse gas emissions. For example, the Conference is addressing both the energy and non-energy uses of fossil fuels, as well as carbon management, to meet the ambitious Net Zero emissions scenario by 2050. In this pathway, in addition to the main pillars of decarbonization, including energy efficiency & conservation, renewables, nuclear, low-emissions fuels, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies, there are cross-cutting enablers, such as innovation, international collaboration, and digitalization, which could accelerate progress by strengthening policy or providing more effective technological solutions. (For more background information on the world’s energy system, including energy supply & transportation, uses of energy, and managing demand & emissions, visit the International Energy Agency website.)

Conference Theme: “Clean Energy Transformation and Carbon Management for a Sustainable Future”
The Conference will focus on the continued utilization of primary energy resources coupled with carbon management to better enable and transition to the future clean energy global market.
History: The conference was originally conceived by the University of Pittsburgh following the Oil Embargo in 1973. It was named Coal Gasification, Liquefaction, and Conversion to Electricity (COGLAC.) In 1984, the conference's name was changed to the Annual Pittsburgh Coal Conference (PCC). Later in 1988, the word "international" was added to reflect the expanded scope and participants of the conference.
The PCC is the "premier" annual event devoted to all aspects of coal, energy and the environment. It aims at fulfilling the ultimate goal of efficient and effective use of coal while protecting the environment.
In recognition of our changing environment, the PCC was rebranded as the Annual International Pittsburgh Energy and Carbon Management Conference (PECMC) in 2024.
PECMC is an international academic meeting initiated and continuously organized by professors of the Swanson School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. Since its founding in 1973, the conference has been hosted by the University of Pittsburgh and is now managed day-to-day by a team led by Professor Badie Morsi. All conference related income—registration fees, event expenses, and partnership funds—is therefore collected and administered centrally through the University of Pittsburgh’s General Accounting office. This is the University’s standard practice for all conferences it hosts, ensuring financial transparency and compliance.
Our conference has been successfully held outside the United States in Beijing, China in 2025; Istanbul, Turkey in 2023; Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, China in 2018; Cape Town, South Africa in 2016; Beijing, China in 2013; Istanbul, Turkey in 2010; Johannesburg, South Africa in 2007; Osaka, Japan in 2004; Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia in 2001; and Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, China in 1997.
The Conference is dedicated to providing a unique opportunity for in-depth and focused exchange of technical information and policy issues among representatives from industry, government and academia throughout the world.
