Install and Configure Xcode

Xcode 3.2.6 is free and for Snow Leopard.
If you will be upgrading to Lion, upgrade first then follow Lion Xcode install procedures.

Do your software updates! Make sure you have the latest version of your operating system.
Have about 10 GB of space free on your hard drive prior to starting the process.

Downloading Xcode can take 30-60 minutes.
The installation wizard takes about 20-30 minutes.

Choose one method below that is easiest for you and then begin writing code!

A. Install from Mac OS X Disc

  1. Insert disc
  2. Double-click "Optional Installs"
  3. Double-click "Xcode"
  4. Follow on-screen instructions

Notes:

  • You received this disc when you purchased your Mac.
  • "Mac OS X Install DVD" is the one you need; "Applications Install DVD" will not work.
  • You can use your friend's disc; doesn't have to be a disc that specifically came with your computer.

B. Download Xcode 3 Image from Apple Web Site

  1. Go to the Mac Dev Center
  2. Click "Log in" (in the upper right)
  3. Input your Apple ID and password
  4. Click "Xcode 3.2.6 and iOS SDK 4.3" to start the download
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions

Notes:

  • If you do not have an Apple ID, you will need to create one.
  • The e-mail address you give needs to be accurate since there is an e-mail verification step.
  • Xcode 3 images can be shared with friends without having them to register.

C. Install from Image (.dmg)

  1. Copy image to your computer (Documents folder)
  2. Double click the image to mount it
(It's like putting a CD into your drive without having a physical disc)
  3. Double-click "Xcode and iOS SDK" (looks like an open box)
  4. Follow on-screen instructions
  5. Unmount the image after installation completes

Notes:

  • This image comes from the Mac Dev Center.
  • It is safe to delete the image after installation if you're stressed for hard drive space.

Mandatory: Change "On Start" to "Show Console"
Selecting "Auto Clear Debug Console" provides convenient cleaning between runs.
Select "Show line numbers" (which requires "Show gutter" to be checked).
In addition, I like to "Show page guide", and "Show column Position".
