Michael Castner (Rosebud Mining) and Brent Means (OSM) present topics related to controlling underground coal mine pools in western Pennsylvania at the 2013 Pitt SME Annual Meeting, on April 12, 2013.
2014– The SME Student Chapter sent a delegation of six students to the 2014 SME Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah. The conference ran from February 22-24. At the meeting, Patrick Himes delivered a presentation detailing the progress made on the ARIES project coal and strata barrier case studies. Additionally, another Pitt SME Student Chapter Annual Meeting was held in late spring in order to raise more funds for the SME Student Chapter.
2013 - In January, SME student chapter members hosted a recruitment booth at Pitt’s Student Activities Fair in order to attract new members. As a result, membership at the end of 2013 was 19 students. CONSOL Energy sponsored two students to attend the 2013 SME Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado. Pitt SME hosted its Annual Meeting on April 12, 2013. Over 40 students and professionals attended the meeting which raised ~$250 for the student chapter, resulting in an end of school year account balance of $913.60. In the fall, students attended the 2013 PCMIA/SME Meeting in Canonsburg, PA. At the meeting, the students attended technical presentations, talked with vendors, met with members of other SME Student Chapters, and went on a field trip to the Mine Technology and Training Center near Prosperity, PA. Later in the year, six students toured the J. H. Fletcher manufacturing facility in Huntington, WV. During the tour of the facility, the students were able to learn about roof bolting and roof support equipment.
2012 – Due to the graduation of a substantial amount of the chapter, membership temporarily dropped to 4 students, but after a successful recruitment campaign, was up to 15 students by the end of the school year. Through the generosity of CONSOL Energy, three student members attended the 2012 SME Annual Meeting in Seattle, Washington. Students also attended the 2012 Joint Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute of America (PCMIA) and SME Pittsburgh Section meeting in Canonsburg, PA.
2011 - Student membership increased to 24. Activities included a field trip to Brookville Equipment Company in Brookville, PA and another successful spring meeting. This meeting had more than 40 attendees and many sponsors. The SME student chapter was able to end the school year with $1,198.68.
2010 - Ten students at the University of Pittsburgh formed a chapter of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME). This effort was facilitated by a $1,500 grant from the Pittsburgh Section of the SME to help offset student membership fees. That year the students put on a highly successful spring meeting. Approximately 50 people attended the meeting. Donations by Rosebud Mining, CONSOL Energy and the Swanson School of Engineering for a silent auction helped the students raise over $600.
